Ashtanga Yoga is a traditional method of dynamic yoga that combines breath, movement, and concentration in a set sequence of postures. This system was promoted by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore and is characterized by its progressive approach: each practitioner advances step by step, developing strength, flexibility, and mental stability over time.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Ashtanga Yoga is the use of Vinyasa, which synchronizes breath with movement, creating a fluid and meditative practice. Through the constant repetition of the sequence, the practitioner not only works the body but also focuses on attention and internal discipline.
The so-called “Mysore format” is the traditional method of teaching Ashtanga Yoga. In this style of class, each student practices at their own pace within a space guided by the teacher. Instead of following a directed class from start to finish, the student progressively memorizes the sequence and receives personalized adjustments and instructions according to their needs.
This approach allows for a more personalized experience, respecting the timing and abilities of each individual. The teacher supports the learning process, providing guidance, corrections, and new perspectives when the student is ready.
The Mysore format fosters autonomy, consistency, and a deeper, more conscious practice. It is ideal for both beginners and advanced practitioners, as each person works from their own starting point, gradually and sustainably integrating the practice into their lives.
The Ashtanga Yoga series
The Ashtanga Yoga method is structured in a progressive sequence of series, designed to gradually develop the body and mind:
- First Series – Yoga Chikitsa (therapy)
Focuses on purifying and aligning the body. Through forward bends and foundational work, it improves flexibility, strengthens the organism, and promotes detoxification.
- Second series – Nadi Shodhana (purification of the energy channels)
Introduces more demanding postures, especially backbends, that stimulate the nervous system and balance internal energy.
-
Third series – Sthira Bhaga (strength and grace)
It is an advanced practice that combines strength, control, and lightness. It includes complex postures that require great physical stability and mental concentration.Timings and fees:
